More Than a Wedding Venue: Hosting Creative Retreats at Black Diamond Lodge

Black Diamond Lodge may be known for weddings, but weddings are only one of the ways our mountain property can bring people together.

This August, we welcomed a group of 16+ professional photographers and videographers to Black Diamond Lodge for a multi-day photography retreat filled with education, connection, styled shoots, and plenty of room to simply get creative.

The lodge became part classroom, part studio, part gathering place, and part creative playground and it was exactly the kind of experience we would love to host more of!

A Photography Retreat in the San Juan Mountains

There is something different about getting out of your normal environment when the goal is to learn and create.

Instead of meeting in a conference room for a few hours and heading home, retreat attendees were able to come together at Black Diamond Lodge, spend time learning from other professionals, collaborate, create new portfolio work, and build relationships throughout the experience.

With 12 guest rooms at the lodge, gathering spaces throughout the property, mountain scenery right outside the door, and room for both structured sessions and downtime, the property gave the group a true retreat experience rather than simply a place to hold a workshop. And for a group of photographers and videographers, having incredible Colorado scenery available without leaving the property certainly didn't hurt.

Two Wedding Styled Shoots, One Mountain Venue

One of the highlights of the retreat was the opportunity to create two separate wedding styled shoots at Black Diamond Lodge. Styled shoots give photographers and videographers a chance to experiment in a way that isn't always possible during a real wedding day. There is time to try something new, play with movement and light, collaborate with other creatives, build portfolio content, and approach familiar wedding moments from an entirely different perspective.

That versatility is one of our favorite things about this space. The lodge doesn't have to look or feel the same for every event, whether it's a wedding, photography retreat, wellness weekend, or company gathering.

A Colorado Retreat Venue That Doesn't Feel Like a Conference Center

Hosting this group reminded us how naturally Black Diamond Lodge works as a Colorado retreat venue.

You can hold an educational session inside, break into smaller groups, head outside to create, gather together for meals, and then actually spend the evening together rather than everyone disappearing to separate hotels. And when the scheduled portion of the day is over, you're still in the mountains.

Black Diamond Lodge also features an on-site spa with three hot tubs, a sauna, and a steam room, giving retreat guests somewhere to unwind after a full day of workshops, meetings, movement, or creative work. It creates a completely different atmosphere from a traditional hotel meeting room.

What Kind of Retreat Could You Host at Black Diamond Lodge?

  • Photography and videography retreats with workshops, styled shoots, portfolio building, and content creation

  • Corporate and small business retreats for strategic planning, team building, leadership meetings, and company getaways

  • Yoga and wellness retreats centered around movement, rest, nature, and intentional time away

  • Women's retreats for community, workshops, faith, wellness, entrepreneurship, or simply gathering together

  • Creative retreats for artists, writers, designers, content creators, and other creative professionals

  • Educational workshops and masterminds that benefit from having attendees together for more than a few hours

The property can become what your group needs it to be! If you're planning a photography retreat, corporate retreat, women's retreat, yoga retreat, creative workshop, mastermind, or small group getaway in Colorado, we'd love to talk about bringing it to Black Diamond Lodge.
